| | BuddhistThe foundation upon which all Buddhist practice rests is ethical conduct and altruism. A variety of practices, beliefs and traditions arise from these two building blocks, creating the spiritual philosophy we call Buddhism. It is a spiritual path leading to liberation that you reach through insight into the ultimate nature of reality. Siddhartha Gautama, who is also called the Buddha, so completely understood the nature of reality he was able to teach his followers in a manner you can follow even today. The Buddha’s Four Noble Truths contain his first teachings after his reaching Nirvana. He explained the way to liberation is by following an Eight-Fold Path. In this fashion Buddhism takes you into understanding reality. For more information about Siddhartha see our article on the Buddha. Today the Buddha’s teachings are continued in two major disciplines. One school is called the Theravada or school of elders. It is the oldest discipline and has a large following in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka. The other school is the Mahayana or great vehicle. Its followers are found in East Asia and both the Zen and Tendai traditions are among its disciplines. You can find Buddhist teachers and devotees throughout the world now; it is no longer limited to the Eastern Hemisphere. Ma’s India has gathered together a diverse collection of Buddhist statuary for your use in exploring this spiritual path. –
