Why buy a mala? In general malas are used to keep count while you are reciting prayers or chanting or even mentally repeating a mantra. This practice has different names in different religions, yet all agree the function of a mala or rosary is to allow you to focus on the sound of the mantra and its meaning instead of counting the repetitions.

Hindus believe your index finger represents your ego, which they feel is the biggest hindrance to reaching spiritual goals. For this reason, they avoid using that finger when doing japa. If you want to follow the Hindu tradition, hold your mala in your right hand, use your thumb to move from one bead to the next while the rest of the mala is draped over your middle finger. Many religions say to go clockwise, though others favor counterclockwise. In some parts of India you drape the mala over the ring finger while counting the beads with your thumb.
