The Durga Ma Statue is very powerful. Hindu mythology tells us Mother Durga manifested when the gods were threatened with extinction by evil forces led by the demon Mahishasur. As she came into being, each of the gods gave up a bit of their own light which became part of Durga’s essence. Several powerful gods gave her weapons with which to fight the demons. Durga holds these weapons in her many arms which signify that she protects her devotees from attack on all sides.

Durga’s name is Sanskrit for ‘invincible’ or ‘a place that is not easily overrun.’ The first syllable ‘du’ refers to the demons of poverty, suffering, famine and evil habits. Disease is covered by ‘r’, and ‘ga’ means the destroyer of sins, injustice, cruelty, and laziness. Taken all together you are fairly well protected by Mother Durga.

Another name for Durga is Triyambake or the three-eyed goddess. In this incarnation Durga’s left eye represents the moon and symbolizes desire. Her right eye is the sun and refers to action, while Durga’s center eye is fire or knowledge.
