The Yin Yang sign, a Taoist symbol, is perhaps the most important symbol in Chinese culture. It stands for the interpenetrating of all opposites. Yin stands for the Earth, the Moon, darkness, quiet, the Female, absorption, and receptivity. Yang stands for the Sky, the Sun, sound, penetration and the power to send out. It is said that the Universe began with the Great Ultimate first cause, out of whose movement Yang first appeared. When it had moved to its height, it rested, and out of that rest, Yin arose. Together Yin and Yang comprise the Tao, the eternal mind of heaven and earth, the origin of all things, human, divine, earthly and celestial.
